European Commission opens hub to fight arms smuggling and illegal migration from Ukraine

The European Commission announced the launch of a hub in Moldova to combat illegal trafficking of weapons and migration from Ukraine.

European Commissioner for Home Affairs Ilva Johansson announced at an informal meeting of EU interior ministers in Prague the intention to open a hub in Chisinau to combat arms smuggling, drug trafficking, human trafficking and illegal migration from Ukraine.

“I am pleased that we can launch this hub today to help ensure security in Moldova. This is a great demonstration of cooperation, which also includes our key agencies in this area – Frontex and Europol. Through this new hub, we will fight firearms smuggling, migrant smuggling, human trafficking, as well as cyber threats and drug smuggling,” Johansson said.

She added that the crisis in Ukraine has aroused great interest among criminal communities not only in Ukraine but also in Eastern Europe.
