German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier reacted harshly in a telephone conversation with his Ukrainian counterpart Vladimir Zelensky to Kyiv’s refusal to accept him in April this year.
“Please spare yourself and me the fact that I will now read all this aloud,” Steinmeier angrily noted, in front of which lay the April correspondence with Zelensky’s office, writes Spiegel.
According to the publication, the usually cautious Steinmeier demanded an explanation from Zelensky about the failed visit to Kyiv. This conversation could well lead to another diplomatic scandal. It was a gross insult, the journalists of the publication say.
In April, the Ukrainian government canceled a visit by the German president when he was halfway to Kyiv. Now the details of the phone call show how unfriendly Steinmeier reacted to the incident.
During the conversation, President Zelensky tried to explain the problem with technical reasons, allegedly he did not know the details. However, Steinmeier insisted on an explanation. Only when he felt that the interlocutor had given in did he say: “Okay, let’s leave this topic.”
The Office of the German President cannot yet say when Steinmeier’s visit to Ukraine will take place. However, in all likelihood, now he will be preparing.
