British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace announced on Twitter that he refuses to take part in the race for the post of leader of the Conservative Party and Prime Minister of the country.
“After careful consideration and discussion with colleagues and family, I have decided not to run for the leadership of the Conservative Party. I am very grateful to all my fellow parliamentarians and other party members who have pledged support,” he said.
The minister added that “it was not an easy choice”, but he is focused on “ensuring the security of a great country.”
Wallace was the top contender to replace Boris Johnson, according to a poll of 716 party members. He is followed by Junior Trade Policy Minister Penny Mordaunt (12%), former Treasury Secretary Rishi Sunak (10%) and Kingdom Foreign Minister Liz Truss in fourth place with 8%.
The Conservative Party aims to find a replacement for former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson by September 2022. The procedure for choosing a new leader of the party will be officially approved on July 11, after a meeting of the Parliamentary Committee of 1922, which unites ordinary Tory deputies. The race to become the leader of the Conservative Party will take place in several stages.
