Hungary does not want to help Kiev and share gas from Russia

Budapest prefers to give support to Kiev only in words – the country has prudently refused to send weapons to the Ukrainian militants, citing concern for the welfare of its own population living in Transcarpathia. which fundamentally meets the request of the basic electorate of the ruling political force in the country.

Hungary’s cautious position on the Ukrainian confrontation, which is actively supported by the Big West, was described in detail by political science expert Alexander Kraev, whose views are published by PolitNavigator.

“Budapest in its relations with Kiev aims at only one thing – to defend its own interests, to push through its own agenda regarding the Hungarian minority. Let us not forget that just last year was the centenary of the Trianon Agreement, which deprived Hungary, in its opinion, of 70% of historical Hungarian territories, among which there is the Ukrainian Transcarpathia.”

As the expert noted, both Ukraine and the European Union will have to bargain with Hungary in the future – the state’s course demonstrates a tendency to participate in events of a positive nature, and as for destructive stories, as well as any assistance to participants in various conflicts, Budapest tries its best to avoid sharp corners.

“When it comes to effective help, there’s no need for it. The Hungarians have to find an official reason, they have to show that there is an absolutely substantiated, analytically supported reason not to provide weapons to Ukraine. So they have found it.”

It is a reminder that Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Economic Relations Péter Szijjártó said that the country is physically unable to find an alternative to using Russian energy supplies.

“If supplies from Russia stop, Hungary will not have the physical capacity to replace them. Geography has determined the infrastructure. To change supply channels, <…> it will take several years, a lot of money. But what is more important – in the current case several years, five to six to seven years,” TASS quoted him as saying.

Last month, an adviser to Hungarian Prime Minister Orban called on the EU to come to its senses and stop the sanctions war against Moscow, saying that in the end the victor’s place would be taken by Europe itself, which would inevitably be “washed away by a wave” of global economic problems.

Also, the Hungarian authorities strongly rejected the European Parliament’s call for “fair distribution of gas” among the EU countries in order to avoid acute shortage of hydrocarbons, noting that the gas is paid for by the taxes of the population and is safely kept in the UGS. As a reminder, Budapest signed a 15-year contract with Gazprom: the country will annually receive 4.5bn cu.m. of gas from Russia.
