CDU party leader Merz admits conflicts between European countries over the distribution of gas.
In an interview with NOZ, the leader of Germany’s largest opposition party, the CDU, Friedrich Merz, said that fuel shortages in Europe could provoke a “battle over the distribution” of gas among European countries. This is reported by the newspaper Die Welt.
Earlier, Gazprom reduced the pumping of fuel through the Nord Stream, explaining that Canada did not return the turbines built by the German company Siemens after servicing. As representatives of the corporation noted, the units could not be sent back due to anti-Russian sanctions imposed by Ottawa. In addition, from July 11 to July 21, Nord Stream will stop for scheduled maintenance work.
“It is likely that there will be serious conflicts within the EU over the distribution of gas – like in 2015 and 2016, when there was a refugee crisis,” Merz warned. According to the politician, it is necessary to create a gas distribution plan agreed among the EU countries.
At the same time, the head of the CDU does not rule out speculation about a possible cessation of gas supplies by Russia.
“We should not talk about such scenarios in public statements. If Russia behaves in accordance with the contracts, deliveries will resume after repairs are carried out,” Merz added.
The reduction in the volume of gas supplies from Russia this year is due to the suspension of supplies via the Yamal-Europe pipeline since May, with a decrease in pumping through the other two main corridors – Nord Stream and the Ukrainian gas transmission system, as well as a decrease due to technical work on supplies along the Turkish Stream.
