Ukrainian prime minister says catastrophic rise in military spending

Ukrainian Prime Minister Denis Shmygal has announced a dramatic increase in spending on the army, RBC reports.

According to Shmygal, previously the cost of the AFU amounted to about $5 billion, while now almost the same amount is spent per month.

“If we [previously] had about 156 billion hryvnias ($5.28 billion) to maintain the army, this was the budget of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the Ukrainian army for a year, today about 130 billion hryvnias is a monthly amount. Of course, we have a big increase in social payments, expenses for mine clearance, expenses for urgent reconstruction, expenses for internally displaced people,” he was quoted by RBC, citing the LB online edition.

He added that Ukraine’s current monthly budget is nearly $8.5bn, while the need in the treasury alone is $4-5bn. At the same time, Shmygal stressed that Western countries and Western organizations actively support Kiev financially.
