The head of the Federal Network Agency, Klaus Müller, did not rule out a complete halt in gas supplies from Russia and called on the German population to save energy.
“For decades, no matter how bad relations were, Russia adhered to the existing agreements. For some time now, it has been different”, TASS quotes Muller with a link to an interview with the Funke media group.
“Russia has reduced supplies via the most important gas artery, Nord Stream, to Germany and Europe by 60%. The technical reasons that justify this do not convince us”, he said.
The head of the agency said that thousands of German companies and the regulator are concerned about the scenario in which, after the technical work planned for the summer on Nord Stream, Russian gas will no longer flow to Germany. “We are wondering if this maintenance will become a long-term political maintenance,” Mueller said.
“The situation could get even worse,” he warned. “If, as a result of the work, the gas flow from Russia is reduced for a longer period for political reasons, then we will have to talk more seriously about savings,” Muller said.
He stated that it is necessary to use the time before the heating season to prepare for energy saving measures, and calls on the owners of houses and apartments to double-check gas boilers and batteries and switch them to a more economical mode. According to him, “this will reduce gas consumption by 10-15%.”
The head of the regulator stressed that even in the event of a cessation of gas supplies, hospitals, nursing homes for the elderly and the disabled, and private households will be provided first.
“I can say that we will do everything to avoid a situation in which private households are left without gas,” Muller promised.
