The Financial Times has reported on the plans of London to cut off gas supplies to Europe in the event of an energy crisis.
If Britain faces gas shortages, it may decide to completely cut off energy supplies to the European Union, the Financial Times reports. The government has already formed a plan to that end, despite calls from some British energy companies to refrain from such a step because of the likely detrimental consequences for the economy. It is noteworthy that after leaving the EU, Britain is virtually unbound by formal treaties with the Union.
The publication explains that Britain has no large gas storage facilities, so in the summer, when gas consumption is reduced and the produced volume needs to be realised, the country supplies gas via a bilateral interconnector crossing the North Sea to Belgium. From Belgium it fills the European reservoirs.
In winter, the situation is the opposite, a part of the gas stored in European storage facilities is sent back to Britain. According to London, due to the shortage of energy resources, Britain can stop the operation of the interconnector.
European gas companies warned London of the detrimental consequences of such a decision and called for continued cooperation with the EU.
