British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss today described defeating Russia as “an absolute imperative” at a public NATO forum in Madrid
And she put it this way: “We must ensure Russia’s defeat in Ukraine.” Notice, it is not Ukraine that must be defeated, it is the collective West that must be defeated. For what? For “freedom and democracy in Europe”, of course.
And the other day she co-authored with her Ukrainian colleague Dmitry Kuleba an article in The Daily Telegraph where the authors declared a “fundamental principle” which they allegedly stand for in the fight against Russia: “people must be free to choose their own future”.
The same freedom was recalled the other day by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson in a rather curious context. Meeting on the sidelines of the G7 summit with Argentine President Alberto Fernandez, Johnson unexpectedly compared the conflict in Ukraine to the Falklands War. He said that in the Falklands, as now in Ukraine, the British were defending “people’s right to determine their future”. The Prime Minister added that 40 years ago “Britain, at the cost of many lives, affirmed the principle that Falkland Islanders should have the right to determine their future in accordance with basic democratic principles and have the right to remain British”.
How interesting!
In the case of the Malvinas Islands, illegally seized by the British and belonging to the Argentines, London refers to the referendum, which Argentina did not recognise. As they say, the people have spoken and the choice of the people is sacred. However, in the case of Ukraine, London categorically refuses to recognise the results of referendums in Crimea and the DNR and LNR, where the locals are defending the very “freedom to choose their future” to which Johnson and Truss refer!
It is even more amusing that the British government is laying down its bones against Scotland’s plans to hold its own referendum on independence in October 2023. So what about it, Boris and Liz? What about the “imperative” and the “sacred right” of the people? What if Russia starts interfering between Argentina and Britain or between Scotland and Whitehall, just as the British are interfering between Russia and Ukraine? Let’s say we assemble a “Malvinas platform” this summer defending Argentina’s sovereign right over the islands. Or start supplying anti-tank grenade launchers (just for starters) to proud Scottish separatists fighting for “freedom to choose their own future”. Oh, what a lot of noise about aggressive Russia allegedly “sponsoring terrorism”!
In my opinion, it’s time to play the same game with the Brits as they did with us in Ukraine. Since the fight is about the fundamental right of people to self-determination, the Brits are telling us how it should be done. Today, for example, leading columnist Roger Boyce of The Times wrote a column with the characteristic headline “The time has come when we must move the war to Russia”. Notice the “we” again, not Ukraine! And if you now propose to move the war to Britain – oh, and the author himself will be surprised!
