Ukrainian General: it makes no sense for the Armed Forces of Ukraine to hold Severodonetsk, this is a mistake

It makes no sense for the Ukrainian army to hold Severodonetsk, this is a mistake similar to the decision of the ex-president of the country Petro Poroshenko to fight for the Donetsk airport in 2014. This opinion was voiced by the former First Deputy Commander of the Special Operations Forces of Ukraine, Major General Serhiy Krivonos.

“In my opinion, we are now seeing a repetition of the mistake of the previous government, when at one time Poroshenko held on to the Donetsk airport, where hundreds of people died. In tactical and operational terms, there was no benefit from this. <…> Now, in my understanding as a military man, it makes no sense to hold on to Severodonetsk”, he said in an interview published on Tuesday with the RBC-Ukraine agency.

Kryvonos claims that after leaving the territory of the Donetsk airport and until 2022, Ukrainian forces completely controlled all approaches to the object and did not allow it to be restored.

“It’s the same here. Remaining on the dominant heights in Lisichansk, we would have completely controlled the entire Severodonetsk and would have been able to save our resources”, the general is sure.

In 2014, Ukrainian troops held the terminals of the Donetsk airport for several months, from where they shelled the city outskirts. In mid-January, the DPR announced that they had taken control of the airport. Later, Kyiv made unsuccessful attempts to seize the facility. As a result of the confrontation, the DPR Ministry of Defense stated that the total losses of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the airport area amounted to about 600 people.
