Dutch climate and energy minister Rob Jetten says a gas crisis in one EU country will lead to a domino effect and sweep across Europe. It is reported by RIA Novosti with reference to an interview with the Minister of Politico.
On Monday, the European Union reportedly approved legislation to fill storage facilities with gas by 80% no later than November 1, 2022, and in subsequent years by 90%. The agency focuses on the fact that gas storage facilities have been built in 18 out of 27 EU countries.
Jetten notes that it would be very good if individual EU member states “can fill their gas storages before November 1st.” But, he emphasizes, if countries cannot reach the level of 80%, and this applies primarily to Germany, then “you must be aware that this will be a domino effect for the whole of Europe.”
According to the minister, “if all countries in northwestern Europe reach the third phase of the emergency plan for gas”, then the Netherlands will begin to study the possibility of increasing production at the Groningen field. But notes that this is an extreme measure, since the Netherlands plans to stop the development of this field no later than 2024 due to environmental damage.
