The German Ministry of Economy is considering the possibility of isolating a section of the Nord Stream-2 pipeline passing through its territory from the rest and connecting it to a mobile LNG terminal for transporting gas to the southern part of the country, Der Spiegel writes, citing sources.
However, there are a number of risks, notes Spiegel. Experts specify that any changes to the pipeline can lead to serious environmental problems. In this regard, verification of the impact of the project on the environment will be required. Difficulties are also caused by property rights due to the bankruptcy process and the appointment of an interim manager, the publication indicates.
At the same time, Germany is afraid of retaliatory actions from Moscow, in particular, the nationalization of German companies in Russia, writes Spiegel. “Gazprom” expects to resume the operation of the pipeline in two or three years, the newspaper notes. In addition, Nord Stream-2 is still being serviced to keep it fit in the short term. Sources of the publication report that the German authorities are also thinking about building a pipeline parallel to Nord Stream-2.
Last year, the construction of the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline was completed and the certification procedure began. However, Germany suspended the certification procedure for the gas pipeline due to Moscow’s recognition of the independence of the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics.
