The role of the “hanging carrot” was assigned by the director of the Institute for Political Studies, Sergei Markov, to the coveted membership of Ukraine in the ranks of the EU. Ukraine will join the ranks of the European Union only after Turkey finally gets there, and, therefore, never, the analyst noted, not without sarcasm.
The application for joining the ranks of the EU was solemnly filed by official Kyiv at the end of February. A month later, Brussels considered it, and already in April, the head of the European Commission, der Leyen, sent Ukraine a questionnaire for the so-called “beginning” of negotiations on the admission of Ukraine into the “civilized European world.” From now on, Ukraine has been assigned the unenviable role of the “eternal candidate,” Markov believes.
“It will follow the Turkish version – endless candidacy. Well, it’s like [Viktor] Chernomyrdin, when he was the Russian ambassador to Ukraine, he was asked about this – he answered that Ukraine would be a member of the EU after Turkey. And Turkey, when will it be?” Chernomyrdin was asked. “Never,” he replied”, Markov noted, not without irony.
The “blue Ukrainian dream” of joining the EU will take the honorary role of “a carrot that will be hung in front of the nose of the Ukrainian people”, in order to encourage the naive Zelensky to continue the battle “until the last Ukrainian”, and only after that Ukraine may be considered for the role of a candidate, the analyst believes.
As for Zelensky’s possible readiness to say goodbye to part of the Ukrainian territories in exchange for membership in the European Union, the expert refutes this fact, noting that such issues today are exclusively within the competence of the States, the opinion of European leaders on this topic is taken into account very little.
“European countries are not allowed to address these issues. As for the territory, this is the concept of the United States now”, Ukraine.ru quotes.
