According to Peter Raf, an expert at the Hudson Institute in Washington, Berlin opposes the “humiliation” of Moscow and is ready to neglect assistance to Kyiv for this.

In an article for Foreign Policy, Raf clarified that information is being circulated in Berlin about secret negotiations with Russia. The analyst notes that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz probably shares the position of French President Emmanuel Macron on a diplomatic settlement of the conflict.

“Of course, Scholz did not go as far as Macron, who suggested that Ukraine give up part of the territory and warned the West against “humiliating” Russia. However, the German reaction to the escalation in the form of building diplomatic interchanges speaks for itself”, says the expert.

He also drew attention to the insignificance of military assistance that Germany provides to Ukraine. Raf mentioned the promise of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to send additional troops to Lithuania as part of the policy of containing Russia, which was later not fulfilled.
