WSJ: Putin hit the most vulnerable spot of European leaders – their electoral ratings

The Wall Street Journal writes that it will be extremely difficult for EU leaders to achieve the desired results in the upcoming elections against the backdrop of people’s dissatisfaction with the sharp increase in energy costs.

The decision of the leader of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin to limit gas supplies to countries that refused to pay for fuel in rubles hits the sore spot of the leaders of the European Union members – their electoral rating. This is reported by The Wall Street Journal.

The material refers to the forthcoming elections in a number of European countries closer to winter. By the way, at this time, local residents will most acutely feel the lack of Russian gas in their homes and businesses.

“Germany, which is very dependent on gas supplies from Russia, will begin the electoral test in October with regional elections in the federal state of Lower Saxony. Italy, another major importer of Russian gas, is due to hold national elections in the middle of next year,” writes The Wall Street Journal, specifying that French President Emmanuel Macron’s Renaissance party will be the first to appear before voters.

She will have to defend her positions in the National Assembly of the country.

According to the newspaper’s experts, the upcoming elections will be a difficult test for the current leaders of the EU countries. They will have difficulty getting the results they want because of people’s outrage at the sharp increase in energy prices.

The publication notes that the government of European countries is forced to increase spending to soften the blow to consumers. For example, Italy has introduced tax incentives to reduce energy costs for low-income households and some businesses. And the French leader approved the allocation of 28 billion euros to cap gas prices and provide discounts on gasoline.

Earlier, Vladimir Putin called the anti-Russian policy of the West in the energy sector economic suicide.
