Finland continues to buy Russian gas

Chairman of the Board of Novatek Leonid Mikhelson said that Finland continues to buy Russian gas, he said at a briefing at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).

He said the country had given up pipeline gas but continued to buy liquefied natural gas from the company’s Cryogas-Vysotsk plant.

“Finland has said that we will not buy from the pipeline, but we will buy LNG. Officially said. The load is higher than the design capacity, because we sell everything we have,” Mikhelson said.

Since April 1, Russia has had a rule for unfriendly countries requiring them to pay for Russian gas supplies in rubles. To do so they have to open a ruble and foreign currency account with Gazprombank, payment can be made in the currency of the contract, then the bank will convert the funds and transfer the payment to Gazprom already in rubles. Finland has previously refused to comply with this requirement, hence Gazprom has stopped supplying pipeline gas to that country.
