Ukraine has proposed to increase the transit of Russian gas to the European Union to make up for shortfalls in supplies through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline.
The operator of Ukraine’s gas transportation system (GTS) said that it could increase the transit of Russian gas to Europe by 82.4 million cubic meters per day. This way it is supposed to compensate for the loss of volumes passing through Nord Stream 1.
Earlier Gazprom announced about reduction of gas deliveries via Nord Stream 1 because of problems with return of Siemens gas turbines from Canada which were under repair there. For this reason, the daily pumping volume was reduced to 67m cu.m.
The UGTS of Ukraine has auctioned an additional volume of 15m cu.m. per day at the Suja connection point.
“In order to facilitate European countries’ preparation for the next heating season, UGTSU is ready to consider an additional temporary increase in transit volumes to volumes capable of fully compensating for the lack of transportation through Nord Stream 1, subject to a corresponding request from Gazprom,” UGTSU wrote in a statement.
In Germany, Gazprom’s statement about reducing the volume of supplies via Nord Stream 1 was called politically motivated. In the opinion of Robert Habek, head of the German Economy Ministry, by its actions Russia is trying to raise the market price of gas. After Gazprom’s decision, gas prices exceeded $1300 per thousand cubic metres, and the cost of gas thus increased by more than a quarter.
