Yulia Vityazeva: Tolerant leaders

It is impossible to think of a bigger humiliation for the EU than the visit of Scholz, Macron and Draghi to bow to Zelensky

I don’t know if the author of this scheme is sitting in London or Washington, but the fact remains the same: the leaders of three biggest countries of the European Union arrived in Kyiv to pay their respects and pacify the country, which not only suffers only losses and troubles, but also impudently, greedy and cheekily argues that everybody owes it, blaming everyone for its misfortunes but not itself.

The visit is particularly humiliating for Germany, whose chancellor the Ukrainian ambassador has as a fish on a parcel and treats as his personal property.

France, too, is not entering Kyiv on a horse, but as an excused schoolboy, trying by all means to justify his gaffe in statements and patronisingly begging forgiveness.

Italy looks less pale, but not great either. But when you are a slave to the lamp you have no choice.

That is why you have to first go to Kiev, then walk around the places of mythical Russian aggression, make a sorrowful face, nod sympathetically and longingly wait to meet the great and terrible Zelensky who will publicly berate you for your lack of help to Ukraine, issue ultimatums, make long and tedious speeches about Russia, beg for EU membership and beg for new sanctions, which will make the same EU become even more poor.

Of course, the press services of the visitors will try to make the most of the trip. But it will be of little use. Because there are less and less people who are ready to keep falling into crisis only because of their love for Ukraine and fear of Russia.

Because it is good to love on a full stomach and with a full purse. And the hatred towards Russians is especially good after a hearty dinner, the appetite for which should not be spoiled by domestic worries in the form of astronomical bills for light and gas.

And when you are sitting and counting every kopeck until your salary, while listening to the news about impending famine, rising prices, a fuel crisis and World War III, which could break out at any moment just because Putin is hurting Ukraine – you clearly have no time for reverences towards Kiev.

And when you hear how your leadership, wiping its feet on your interests, humbly promises a foreign country a lot of money solely in exchange for its approval – it’s not just hatred, it’s noble rage that boils up like the ninth wave and can hit you so hard that Vesuvius is not even close at hand.

And the trio of V’s understand that. But there’s nothing they can do. Because they’re bonded birds. They go where they’re sent, do what they’re told.

It’s sad. But it’s their own fault. Although, of course, when some coke-headed schmuck in a washed T-shirt and with a three-day unshaven look up at you and brazenly declares that “in order to be a leader, you must not consider yourself a leader, but behave as one” – it’s very offensive.

But you have to put up with it. Lest it get worse.
