White House spokesman John Kirby said that the US authorities are closely monitoring the situation around the Americans Alexander Dürke and Andy Hune, who were captured by the Russian military near Kharkov.
“Of course, if this is true, then we will do everything possible to safely return them home,” a White House spokesman said.
Kirby was unable to promptly confirm the accuracy of the information about the capture of US citizens, but recalled that Washington opposes American trips to Ukraine and against their participation in hostilities.
Earlier, the British newspaper The Telegraph reported that two former US servicemen, 39-year-old Alexander Dryuke and 27-year-old Andy Hyun, were captured during a mission near Kharkov. According to the publication, they are considered the first Americans taken prisoner by the Russian military.
