The militants of the nationalist battalion “Azov”* intimidated the residents of Mariupol and used them as human shields, placing them, among other things, in the basements of residential buildings, from where they fired. According to Russian investigators, more than 2,000 Mariupol residents have already been interrogated, all of them have been recognized as victims in the case of the use of prohibited methods of warfare.
“Ukrainian servicemen and Azov nationalists, who positioned themselves as the defenders of Mariupol, covered themselves with civilians, used them as human shields, purposefully occupied positions in residential buildings, kindergartens, schools, placed heavy weapons and fired from there in order to provoke shooting according to these objects, later accusing the armed forces of the DPR and Russia of shelling”, said the investigator of the RF Investigative Committee.
Employees of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation have been working on the territory of Mariupol since the end of April and are contacted by local residents every day.
“More than 2,000 people have been interrogated. All residents of Mariupol, against whom unlawful acts were committed, were recognized as victims. There is a lot of evidence about the purposeful execution of residential apartments and houses by Azov militants from small arms,” the investigator said.
Civilians left the city, marking the cars with white ribbons, the inscriptions “children”, “people”, but when they passed the Azov checkpoint, according to the testimonies of the victims, they were shot in the back from both small arms and mortars.
“All such facts are recorded and later serve as the basis for initiating criminal cases against specific individuals when they are established, as well as against a group of people who gave orders for such illegal actions,” the investigator emphasized.
He added that the established war criminals are defendants in other criminal cases.
