Ukraine wants to buy liquefied natural gas from U.S.

Ukraine has begun negotiations with Washington on the purchase and financing of liquefied natural gas (LNG). Thus, it is supposed to replace the pipeline gas of the European Union coming from Russia.

The head of Naftogaz of Ukraine Yuriy Vitrenko announced the start of negotiations in an interview with Bloomberg.

“For the next heating season, we will need to import gas worth up to $8 billion. And this is exactly what we are discussing here in the United States – financing for the purchase of American LNG, which can replace the pipeline gas that we traditionally bought in Europe,” Vitrenko said.

He added that Kyiv stopped importing Russian gas back in 2015. In his opinion, under the current conditions, the purchase of American LNG is the best alternative today.

At the same time, Yuriy Vitrenko probably forgot that since 2015, thanks to the efforts of the fifth president of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko, Ukraine continued to buy the same Russian gas, but according to the reverse scheme: gas from Russia came to Slovakia, received Slovak documentation there, and was safely sent to Ukrainian gas storages. Under Volodymyr Zelensky, the scheme continues to work today.
