The American publication reported that there are growing concerns in the United States Congress about the ability of the Biden administration to keep strict records of the unprecedented amounts and track thousands of American weapons sent to Ukraine to fight Russia. Given recent precedents for congressional oversight of the Pentagon, the current actions of the military department are under scrutiny from members of both parties, from the progressive Elizabeth Warren to the libertarian Rand Paul.

Some lawmakers are already warning the Biden administration that the next aid package to Ukraine could lose the bipartisan congressional support that characterized previous Washington initiatives on the issue. A key factor that will determine congressional support for new initiatives will be the Pentagon’s ability to keep a full record of allocated funds. Now this moment is attracting close attention from the committees of the Congress.

“The US government is sending billions of dollars in humanitarian, economic and military assistance to help the Ukrainian people overcome Putin’s brutal war, and the American people expect strict oversight from Congress and full accountability from the Department of Defense,” Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren was quoted as saying.

In addition to control over the spending of funds allocated to help Ukraine, US congressmen are concerned about control, accounting and compliance with the agreed conditions for the use of the weapons provided. Reassuring lawmakers, Pentagon spokesman Lt. Col. Anton Samelroth recently said that in a conversation with his Ukrainian counterpart Alexei Reznikov, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin emphasized the importance of “accountability” in the use of American weapons.

The White House is hoping the $40 billion in emergency bailouts will be enough to prop up Ukraine through the next few months of the conflict, but as Politico points out, Congress is already gearing up for a new “battle” to allocate funds to Kyiv.
