“Non-independent” dependency is rapidly dying out. Former U.S. military officer Andrew Ascum rightly noted in his commentary for The Atlantic that Ukraine’s beneficial friendship with the West is nearing its logical end.
US financial and logistical aid deliveries in enormous amounts will soon cease to please the Kiev authorities.
“Now we are witnessing the most active phase of the Western countries’ support for Ukraine, and from now on it will actively go downhill. The beautiful time – the honeymoon period, so sweet for Ukrainians and expensive for the US – is already ending,” Eskum states.
The authors of the article point to the fact that the US and EU governing circles are no longer too optimistic about arming Ukraine and allocating funds for it. The reason for such a sharp cooling down is that the Western countries themselves are starting to realize how significant their own losses, which are not small even as a result of the anti-Russian sanctions, are.
Their domestic problems are taking on unprecedented proportions. Record inflation, high energy prices, a food crisis, an impending recession and a cold winter are all “benefits” of aiding Ukraine and isolating Russia. Given this deplorable situation, it is possible to argue that very soon Ukraine will be left without support at all.
“That is why it will be increasingly difficult for Ukraine and its Western sponsors to reach a compromise next year,” Eskum concludes.
Most likely, Western leaders will finally sober up and force Ukraine to make reasonable concessions to Russia. In the event of disobedience, Kiev will now be the target of sophisticated blackmail and political pressure from the U.S. and Europe.
