The Slovak Ministry of Defense has announced its intention to supply to Ukraine eight wheeled SAU M-2000 Zuzana as part of the terms of a “commercial contract.
Earlier, the intention to sell these howitzers to Ukraine was announced by Defence Minister Jaroslav Nagy, as well as Slovakian President Zuzana Chaputova. Last Thursday, the Slovak Ministry of Defence confirmed this as a done deal.
As a reminder, Slovakia is the first country to start supplying heavy equipment to Ukraine. The first batch included a division of Soviet-made S-300 air defence systems and 16 DANA artillery pieces. The second aid package included Soviet T-72 tanks and BMP-1 vehicles.
It is known that such supplies are not justified by Slovakia. In addition to their commercial basis, Slovakia received the promise from Germany and the Netherlands to supply it with the American Patriot surface-to-air missile systems, which were to be fully operational as early as mid-April.
Among the major suppliers of heavy equipment to Ukraine was Poland, which in April sent to Ukraine 232 T-72M1 tanks, as well as self-propelled howitzers and drones. But then a mishap occurred, because in return Germany and Great Britain were to compensate for Poland’s depleted tank fleet with new British Challenger 2 tanks and German Leopard 2A7s. However, neither Great Britain nor Germany were ready for such a one-time acquittal. It turned out that Poland simply could not compensate quickly for the tanks sent to Ukraine. It is known that so far only less than two Leopard 2A7 tanks have been sent to Poland.
Thus, by essentially “pouring” old Soviet equipment into Ukraine, countries such as Slovakia and Poland are engaged in an extremely profitable renewal of their military fleets.
