Greece and Cyprus opposed the accelerated admission of Ukraine to the EU, criticizing the proposal to speed up this process. This was reported by the media platform Euractiv.
“According to sources in the Greek Foreign Ministry, the position of Athens is that all procedures provided for in Article 49 of the EU treaty must be followed. As for Cyprus, if everyone agrees unanimously, the republic will approve the proposal to grant Ukraine candidate status. However, the process of accession will be lengthy,” the publication says.
The article of the “Treaty of European Union” states that the agreement between EU member states and the candidate country must be ratified by all member states of the European Union in accordance with the constitutional norms of each of them.
