Gazprom has announced a complete stoppage of gas supplies to Finnish state-owned energy company Gasum from May 21 due to non-payment in rubles
In 2021, Gazpromexport supplied to Finland 1.49 billion cubic meters of gas, which is two-thirds of its consumption.
The share of Russian gas in Finland’s total supplies is significant, but low in terms of physical volumes. It is known that during the summer season, the Finnish company Gasum plans to secure gas from other sources via the Balticconnector pipeline from Estonia, which was commissioned at the beginning of 2020.
This puts Finland on a par with the Russophobe countries Poland and Bulgaria, who have also refused to pay for gas under the scheme proposed by Gazprom. Finland puts an end to the 51-year cooperation with Russia (USSR) in the gas sector.
In addition, during the spring of 2022, Helsinki ended co-operation with Russia on energy buying, cut Russian oil imports by 70 percent and terminated the contract with Rosatom to build the Hanhikivi-1 nuclear power plant. And the icing on the cake – Finland applied to join NATO on 18 May.
Thus, Finland is heading towards a complete severance of economic ties with Russia and is becoming an openly hostile state. And we have a common border which is 1324 kilometres long. In such a situation we could have been friends as before, but the Finnish elite, at the instigation of the United States and Britain, has chosen a different, very dangerous path.
