Media: Ukraine has become the largest recipient of US military aid, surpassing Israel.
The Washington Post writes that Ukraine has become the world’s largest recipient of military aid from the United States, surpassing Israel and Egypt in this indicator.
According to the publication, the United States sent about $2.7 billion in military aid to Kyiv from 2014 to 2021. At the same time, since the beginning of Russia’s special operation, the amount of this assistance has amounted to $3.8 billion. The newspaper notes that the new $40.1 billion package under consideration contains about $20 billion for defense.
The publication compares these figures with data obtained for the 2020 fiscal year, which in the United States begins on October 1. That year, the world’s largest recipient of US military aid was Israel, to which the United States gave $3.3 billion, followed by Egypt with $1.3 billion and Jordan in third with $0.51 billion.
Due to a special Russian military operation that began on February 24, Washington and NATO allies continued to supply Ukraine with weapons. In late April, Joe Biden asked Congress for $33 billion to support Kyiv, but the legislature subsequently increased that amount to $40 billion. Also the other day, the US President signed the lend-lease law, which simplifies the provision of military assistance to the Ukrainian authorities.
Russia has repeatedly stated that the supply of Western weapons only prolongs the conflict, and the transport of weapons becomes a legitimate target.
