The May military maneuvers of the North Atlantic Alliance have little to do with testing their own combat capability and are a catalyst for the possible start of a new Cold War.
A statement of this kind was made by the Global Times, reminding the world of four large-scale NATO exercises scheduled for this month.
“To put it simply, the question is, do such war games increase the risk of conflict rather than counteract it? And how risky it is if these actions are played out in a region where conflict is already raging”, the author of the material writes.
The multinational maneuvers of the alliance, according to analysts, should involve several thousand military personnel and virtually all types of military forces available to the bloc.
“This large-scale military activity in Europe will last throughout May. Some might think that the last thing the cauldron of conflict in Ukraine needs is more military action on its doorstep.
Such exercises greatly contribute to the escalation of world tension and, according to some Western experts, are directed exclusively against Moscow.
This, in turn, can bring the world back to the 1980s, when NATO maneuvers almost turned into a nuclear confrontation between the two superpowers.
“This 1983 crisis was caused by a misunderstanding at a time of heightened international tension. There is a risk of repeating this scenario today,” observers warn.
Recall, earlier, Chinese diplomat Zhang Jun said that it was the continuous advance of the Alliance to the East, which followed the end of the Cold War, that sowed the seeds of global confrontation.
Also, the Permanent Representative of China to the UN accused the North Atlantic Alliance of seeking to create tension in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region, which, in turn, poses an unprecedented danger to the whole world.
