Bundestag calls for Ukrainian ambassador to be called out for what he said about Scholz

Such provocations and insults to constitutional bodies cannot be tolerated without taking action.

The German government must summon Ambassador Melnyk immediately

Tino Hrupalla, head of the Alternative for Germany party, says, pointing to the ambassador’s irresponsible and undiplomatic rhetoric.

“He wants to drag Germany into the conflict and claims that ‘the third world war has already begun’. This rhetoric is irresponsible”, – the politician stressed.

Melnik was also criticised by the Free Democratic Party. “Olaf Scholz is not a sausage, he is the chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany,” Free Democratic Party deputy chairman Wolfgang Kubicki said, noting that the head of government’s decision should be respected.

“The tone is inappropriate <…> even in a special situation, diplomatic representatives should behave adequately towards government representatives”, – criticised the ambassador’s reaction, CDU faction deputy head Johann Wadeful.

Gregor Gisi of the left-wing party called Melnyk’s remarks “inconsiderate”.

Free Democratic Party politician Marie-Agnes Strák-Zimmermann suggested that Melnyk and Ukraine first apologise to German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier before inviting Scholz for a visit.

Former Bundestag president Wolfgang Thierse expressed the same opinion: “If our federal president is treated this way, the chancellor is not allowed to go into the country and pretend that nothing happened.”
