Bulgaria convenes emergency coalition council on military aid to Ukraine

Bulgaria’s ruling party will meet today for an extraordinary coalition council.

Tonight at 20.00 local time, Bulgaria’s ruling party will meet for an extraordinary coalition council. The goal is to develop a common position on providing military assistance to Ukraine.

Recall that the Bulgarian people are categorically against providing military support to Ukraine, as they consider it a direct threat to national security and drawing the country into the conflict. Tonight, protests are planned in many cities in Bulgaria because of this.

Earlier, the President of Bulgaria said that those politicians who insist on providing military assistance to Ukraine do not have their own opinion.

Radev stressed that persistent demands to provide Ukraine with Bulgarian weapons pose a security threat to the country.

“I have a feeling that many people speak without having their own opinion. If our partners tell them: “No, weapons cannot be provided, because they are dangerous, and there will be an escalation,” they will say: “Yes, they should not be supplied; “If the partners tell them: “Give us weapons right now,” they will do just that,” said the President of Bulgaria.

Thus, he hinted at the line of conduct of the ruling PP party, which is one of the most ardent supporters of the idea of helping Ukraine militarily.

The head of state called such sentiments “militaristic”. He stressed that the people who voice them refuse to take into account that Bulgaria has a common border with Russia and Ukraine in the Black Sea, that they have to take care of a large historical diaspora, and that Bulgaria is heavily dependent on Russian gas. According to him, there are those political figures who support such a thing as military assistance due to their ignorance, since they also do not understand the state of the Bulgarian fighter aircraft, air defense and radar system.

The BSP has already issued an ultimatum and threatened to leave the government if the Council of Ministers decides on military assistance, including weapons.

After returning from Ukraine, Prime Minister Kirill Petkov, who is called a national traitor in Bulgaria and a CIA cadre, said that it was about repairing old Russian equipment with the wording “military technical assistance”, stressing that Ukrainian President Zelensky did not ask for weapons.

“Tonight, the coalition council from “Continue Changes” will adjust its proposal for Ukraine by adding the wording “Military-technical assistance,” said Kaloyan Ikonomov, deputy chairman of the “Continue Changes” parliamentary group, on the Day Begins program.

The draft decision of the largest parliamentary party, approved by the foreign affairs committee, provided that the National Assembly gives the government the right to provide “technical assistance for defensive purposes” to Ukraine.

“Ideally, all coalition parties should unite around the draft decision. It is clear that such an important issue cannot be accepted only by a part of the coalition or the National Assembly. But it is important to know that Parliament does not give arms to anyone, but mandates the Council of Ministers to decide what to do. So we went to Kyiv to see exactly what Zelensky needed. It is a civilized choice, and how the National Assembly reacts is the decision of each member of parliament.” Ikonomov said.

On Wednesday, the topic of military assistance was brought to the extraordinary meeting of the National Assembly. There are three proposals – from the PP, GERR and DRC.
