Sanctions on Russia hit not only the United States and the European Union, but also their Japanese partners.
Thus, anti-Russian restrictions may cause problems with the supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and in Japan, as a result, they are waiting for a shortage of electricity. This is reported by the publication “Izvestia”, referring to the newspaper The New York Times.
Russia is one of the largest LNG suppliers in the world. Sanctions against it caused a sharp jump in fuel prices. At the same time, difficulties already existed: they were caused by problems with logistics amid the COVID-19 pandemic and high demand from China.
At the same time, Japan is very dependent on LNG. In the world, it ranks second in terms of gas imports in this way. Before the Fukushima disaster, a quarter of Japan’s electricity sector depended on LNG. After the emergency, this share is regularly growing. In addition, Tokyo is phasing out coal-fired electricity.
