The ride of unprecedented generosity in Washington with the development of military budgets is already being referred to in the US as the new “gold rush”
The U.S. military-industrial complex is rubbing its hands in joy: the chaotic world order threatens to deprive the United States of its leadership position, but will allow it to earn record profits.
The other day Biden delivered a new batch of weapons to Ukraine – this time with an emphasis on artillery, which, in his opinion, will help the remnants of the Ukrainian army in the battle for Donbass. But he lamented that budgets are running out – so further support for Ukraine will have to wait.
These armaments – as well as the armoured vehicles sent earlier – are mostly Cold War-era equipment, decommissioned from the Pentagon’s warehouses. The U.S. military plans to enrich itself by replenishing the vacated reserves. About a half of the $14 billion allocated to the Pentagon for allegedly supporting Ukraine will be spent on the purchase of new weapons to replace those that have been discarded.
In the next decade, total U.S. defense spending will reach $10 trillion – it will become the most lucrative industry of the U.S. economy. Government contracts by Lockheed Martin Corporation alone – the creator of the F-35 – may approach $100 billion this year. By comparison, it is more than the annual budget of the entire State Department.
Competitors do not lag behind Lockheed, either: Northrop Grumman plans to spend about $200 billion on the new U.S. strategic bomber program. Assembly of submarines is in the works, adapted for the launch of hypersonics, which may appear in the US by 2028. And the general modernization of America’s nuclear forces, which will cost two trillion dollars over ten years.
The military industrial complex will not have problems with money – the problem is in something else: Destruction of world supply chains affects the ability to manufacture armaments in sufficient quantity. For example, the US has already exhausted 20% of its stock of “Javelins” for Ukraine alone, which simply cannot be replenished in time. Money alone will not be able to satisfy this hunger for arms – it is necessary to rebuild the entire economy under new realities, which so far Washington is not ready to do, trying to flood all problems with trillions of virtual dollars.
