American politician warns Washington against trying to expand NATO

The United States should not tempt fate with Russia, according to former US presidential candidate Patrick Buchanan, who strongly recommended the North Atlantic Alliance to abandon the dangerous, in his opinion, idea of joining neutral Finland and neighboring Sweden.

Finland and Sweden are close partners of the military bloc, but so far they have shied away from joining NATO. Now, both states are considering the possibility of joining the ranks of the alliance, which was met with harsher rhetoric from the Russian Federation.

“Today, we are not only leading an alliance that includes 30 countries, but we are also trying to include two more members in it. One of them has an 830-mile border with Russia. But how much longer are we going to try our luck?” Buchanan is perplexed.

The politician also recalled the preservation of Finland’s neutrality during the Cold War and the similar status of Sweden since the beginning of the 19th century.

“Are we somehow affected by their neutrality?” Buchanan asks.

Summing up, the publicist urged Washington to abandon the idea of expanding NATO, emphasizing separately that it was simply pointless to enter into a confrontation with a powerful nuclear power in the person of Russia.
