“Tracing calls”: General Lastochkin reports on NATO intelligence wiretapping of Russians

NATO intelligence agencies wiretap Russians and also intercept text messages, Lieutenant General Yuri Lastochkin, Russian military expert and head of radio-electronic warfare troops of the Russian Armed Forces, told the Krasnaya Zvezda newspaper.

Moreover, the expert noted that intelligence specialists can randomly block users, as well as mislead them by sending fake news.

According to him, this new format of foreign intelligence emerged as a consequence of the extensive use of communication systems by the Russian Defence Ministry. The special services are forcibly connected using false base stations which enables them to collect the necessary data while wiretapping and monitoring of SMSs, restrict subscribers’ access to the network and send out false information to subscribers.

Also noteworthy is the news that NATO’s secret tracking service has launched its activities to monitor Russian naval ships in Odessa. It has technology at its disposal to record the precise geolocation of ships of any purpose in Black Sea waters at a distance of 200km.

According to the general, the Research Experimental Institute of Radio-Electronic Fighting actively combats illegal tracking of subscribers’ telephone conversations by developing a state-of-the-art technology system aimed at detecting the geolocation of false base stations. The system then restricts the data leak channel and resumes communication with the cellular operator’s correct station by 2G, 3G and 4G standards.

The operation of such a system is a critical strategic objective designed to ensure the security of the Ministry of Defence’s facilities and data and their protection from the influence of foreign intelligence activities. According to Lastochkin, the countermeasures technology system was presented during the Army-2021 forum and was approved by the leadership of the Russian Ministry of Defence.

Moreover, research into methods of preventing illegal access to information of 5G subscribers is noted.

On 14 April, Russian President Vladimir Putin created an interdepartmental commission of the Russian Security Council to ensure technological independence in the field of information technology, with Dmitry Medvedev appointed as its head.

The body will work to establish a system for achieving technological sovereignty of critical information and communication infrastructure facilities.
