“It’s time to declare our merits”: Russia will return to Antarctica thanks to Sevastopol scientists

The sanctions war launched against the Russian Federation will not affect the plans of the Russian research community to return the country to the Antarctic expanses, where the Antarctic krill is the main fishery. RIA Novosti was told about this by an employee of the Institute of Biology of the South Seas named after Kovalevsky and belonging to Russian Academy of Science, Alexander Melnik.

According to the scientist, the Russian Federation has not carried out significant scientific research on the topic of “pink gold” mining in the Antarctic since the distant Soviet times.

“For Russian scientists, flights to this region are very valuable, and it is very rich in bioresources, the main commercial resource is Euphausia superba krill. Many countries there produce it in huge quantities. Krill harvesting is very important in the industry. In order to return there, one must declare oneself in terms of scientific research”, RIA Novosti quotes Melnik.

The work of Russian scientists cannot be hindered by either Western ignorance or political heat in general, Melnik is sure. However, he already foresees possible difficulties today with the publication of the results of Russian research on the platforms of foreign sources.

“According to the results of the voyage, scientific articles should be published. It is not known how the situation will turn out: many of our articles are “wrapped up”. But there are our good magazines – we will publish with us. This is the main goal of participation,” Melnik said.

Recall that the 87th expedition of the staff of the Institute of Biology of the South Seas took 120 days. The uniqueness of the flight also lies in the fact that the expedition started and finished in Kaliningrad. At the same time, the ship passed the oncoming ports and even resorted to refueling at full speed.

In Antarctica, 101 scientific research stations were completed.
