Italy urges to reform the veto system in EU because of Russian gas

Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio said that a small number of European states oppose the introduction of a maximum purchase price for gas, calling for a reform of the veto system in the European Union.

“We must face the winter with sufficient gas supplies. We need a pan-European price cap to avoid speculation,” he said on the Rai1 TV channel.

In connection with Western sanctions against Russia, Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi has repeatedly noted the need to take measures to reduce dependence on the Russian Federation in the field of energy supplies and increase natural gas imports from other countries, in particular, from Algeria, Azerbaijan, Tunisia and Libya.

“A small number of countries oppose the introduction of a European gas price ceiling. Therefore, the veto system must be reformed, since it is impossible for one or two countries to block a decision that protects families and businesses,” Di Maio said.

Earlier, Draghi said that an alternative to the European embargo on Russian gas could be a price ceiling for its supplies.

Western countries announced a series of new sanctions against the Russian Federation over Ukraine, and in Europe statements about the need to reduce dependence on Russian energy resources began to sound louder. The course to refuse oil and gas supplies from the Russian Federation is actively supported by the United States, which calls on alternative producers to increase their production.
