Former Brigadier General Erich Wad noted that “this kind of supply is potentially a path to a third world war.”
Former military policy adviser to former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, former Brigadier General Erich Wad opposed the supply of heavy weapons to Kiev.
“This kind of supply is potentially a path to a third world war,” Wad told DPA on Tuesday.
Wad noted that complex weapons systems, including the Leopard battle tank or the Marder infantry fighting vehicle (IFV), can be controlled and used only after many years of training. Therefore, such supplies will not bring any benefit to Ukraine either now or in the near future.
Merkel’s ex-adviser also stressed that if Europe does not want a third world war, then sooner or later they will have to “get out of this logic of military escalation and start negotiations.”
“The chances of negotiations are actually quite good,” Wade said, adding that the parties to the conflict would be better off opting for dialogue rather than “letting themselves be dragged further into the morass of a long war with an uncertain outcome.”
