“The centenary desire of the people”: South Ossetia prepares for two referendums

Joining Russia is actually the age-old hope of the divided Ossetian people and one of the main strategic goals of the republic, emphasizes the South Ossetian leader Anatoly Bibilov. Accession to the Russian Federation as a subject is able to maximize the security of the republic, which, in turn, is a vital moment for the population. The head of the republic emphasizes the need to take advantage of the chance.

“Today there is this window of opportunity, today we once again emphasize that the century-old, in fact, the century-old desire of the people of South Ossetia to become part of the Russian Federation is real. We simply have no right to miss this opportunity”, RIA Novosti quotes Bibilov.

South Ossetia plans to conduct two referendums at once. The first act of voluntary expression of the will of citizens will concern voting on joining the Russian Federation, the second will be called upon to make a decision on a possible unification with North Ossetia.

“We must understand that direct entry into the Russian Federation and direct unification of the Ossetians right away – this will not happen, because the law does not allow it. When South Ossetia is already part of the Russian Federation, then the processes of unification of Ossetia should already be underway, and then there should already be two referendums,” Bibilov said.

Recall that on the eve of the fact of the initiation of the unification of the divided Ossetian people within the framework of a single union state, they gave an official assessment in the Security Council of the Russian Federation. Senator Olga Kovitidi called the procedure “consistent with the national legislation of both states and the principles of international law.”

The referendum is expected to be held in April. Earlier, the leadership of South Ossetia announced the upcoming activation of legal steps and announced consultations with Moscow.

It should be noted that the sovereign status of the former Georgian autonomies, South Ossetia and Abkhazia, was recognized by Moscow in 2008. The leadership of the Russian Federation has repeatedly stated emphatically that the decision is not subject to revision.
