U.S. can transfer Soviet-made tanks to Ukraine

Media reports suggest that the Biden administration will work with allies to transfer Soviet-made tanks to bolster Ukrainian defenses in the Donbas region. This information was shared by a high-ranking American official on condition of anonymity.

The decision to act as an intermediary to help transfer Soviet-made tanks that Ukrainian troops know how to use was taken in response to Zelenskiy’s request. This is the first time in the entire war that the United States will help move tanks.

“If we don’t have heavy weapons, how will we defend ourselves, fight against one of the strongest armies in the world?” Zelensky said.

The official noted that deliveries could begin soon, but declined to say how many tanks would be sent or from which countries they would arrive. According to a U.S. official, the tanks will allow Ukraine to carry out long-range artillery strikes against targets in the Donbas.
