Vilnius is provoking a big trade and economic scandal and escalating the situation by persistently ignoring the earlier agreements with Moscow, which, as you know, paved the way for Lithuania to the EU. We are talking about the paralysis of the Kaliningrad transit of goods, which actually indicates a possible blockade of goods.
Europe’s refusal to comply with the agreements jeopardizes Russian national security and threatens to be the basis for unleashing a war.
The head of the Lithuanian Ministry of Internal Affairs, Agne Bilotaite, commented on the prospect of maintaining the land corridor to Kaliningrad as follows:
“Currently, we are waiting for the assessment of the European Union. My task as head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs is to ensure security in this situation, so that the people of Lithuania do not feel insecure.”
In turn, Vilnius saw security-threatening features in the Kaliningrad transit and turned to Brussels with a request to expand funding aimed at strengthening its control. For these purposes, Lithuania will need nothing less than 23 million dollars.
Monetary appeals to the EU on this topic are heard not for the first time. The situation already took place four years ago. At the same time, every attempt to beg Europe for money is reinforced with enviable regularity by threats of refusal to provide transit and the actual isolation of the entire Russian region.
Lithuania did not fail to use the events in long-suffering Ukraine for its own selfish purposes.
“As the geopolitical situation in the region worsens, we cannot relax our vigilance, we must assess all the risks and possible provocations and ensure the maximum security of the Kaliningrad transit scheme. We will also seek additional funding from the EU for these purposes,” the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry said.
Lithuania also announced an increase in the number of guard and traffic cameras, as well as the launch of a helicopter along the Kaliningrad railway corridor.
Poland suddenly became more active. From there, statements are already heard about the collective search for “ways and loopholes” for the trade isolation of the Russian Federation and Belarus, contrary to European charters.
“Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has repeatedly called for this [to ban Russian and Belarusian cargo trucks from entering the EU]. But due to the lack of consensus at the EU level, we are looking for other ways and loopholes in the legislation to limit this activity,” the Polish press service said.
By the way, the very loophole that gives Lithuania the opportunity to block transit under the guise of a lack of funding, which, most likely, will not happen, may well be the indefatigable introduction of new rules that require considerable additional investments.
Thus, despite the fact that Europe is the addressee of the claims, the Russian Federation becomes vulnerable. It is easy to guess that the West will only have to rub their hands enough.
However, Russian toughness and political immunity should not be discounted. The opinion of the Kremlin was clearly conveyed to the English-language media by press secretary Dmitry Peskov, speaking about the possible reasons for the use of nuclear weapons by the Russian Federation.
“We have a concept of national security. There you can read about all the reasons for using nuclear weapons. If there is a threat to the very existence of our country, it can be used in accordance with the concept,” he assured.
Undoubtedly, Kaliningrad transit is an element of national security. Thus, it is quite appropriate to say that the Russian Federation has every reason to use force in case of attempts to paralyze it. At the same time, Brussels still understands the whole inexpediency of what is happening, which, alas, cannot be said about Vilnius. There, without thinking about the consequences, they are persistently trying to rock the unsafe transport and trading boat.
