White House Communications Director Kate Bedingfield said that a meeting between US President Joe Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin could only be held if there was a meaningful de-escalation in Ukraine and Moscow showed a mood for diplomatic engagement, she told a briefing with journalists on Tuesday
“I think he [Biden] said quite clearly that it would depend on what Mr Putin wants to talk about”, – she said when asked whether the US leader was ready to meet the Russian president. – “I will not set the terms for the conversation between Presidents Biden and Putin. All I will say is that we have been clear, President Biden has been clear, that before there can be such a dialogue, there needs to be tangible de-escalation on the part of Russia and a clear, sincere commitment to diplomatic engagement”, – Bedingfield added.
