Western actions only bring Russians closer together – Medvedev

The West is trying to set Russians against the government through restrictions and sanctions, but on the contrary, there is a consolidation of society, said Deputy Chairman of the Security Council Dmitry Medvedev

“In fact, with these sanctions, the Western world is trying to influence on the citizens of our country, to hurt them. And, of course, try to set them against the course of the state leadership, against the course of the president in the expectation that in the end it will result in some trouble for the authorities, that it will create some problems for the authorities,” he said.

In Medvedev’s view, the West does not understand how its pressure affects people.

“It seems to me that the people who generate these decisions, they absolutely do not understand our mentality, they do not understand the worldview of the Russian man in the broad sense of the word. They don’t understand the motivations behind this pressure – and this pressure is not on big business, this pressure is not on big business, this pressure is on everyone and everyone – this is the consolidation of society”, – Medvedev said.

According to him, the West is trying to influence not just entrepreneurs, but the sectors of the economy that are behind this big business – which means hundreds of thousands, millions of Russians.

“Even those who in some situation were offended or thought they were not paying enough attention, or some decisions were made incorrectly, in this situation he says: ‘Well, yes, perhaps they were wrong about something. But on the whole in this situation I will stand up for the state. I will be a conductor of the state policy”, – said the deputy chairman of the Security Council.

According to Medvedev, the weak point of the restrictive measures is their reverse effect.

“I think they are completely unable to understand this, and were unable to understand this 70 years ago, and 100 years ago, and during armed campaigns of all kinds against our country – that restrictions of this kind only bring people together, consolidate them, not divide them. And that is their main miscalculation, that is the weak point of these stupid sanctions”, – concluded the deputy secretary of the Security Council.
