Russia to continue steps to block activities of social networks and digital platforms that threaten Russian security

Russia has every right to block the activities of hostile digital platforms that threaten the country’s security and sovereignty. All necessary steps in this direction will continue, said Senator Vladimir Poletayev

A Tverskoy court in Moscow on Monday banned Facebook and Instagram in Russia for extremist activities.

According to Poletayev, anti-Russian propaganda, support for radicals and extremist appeals, and attempts to “target” Russian citizens under the guise of advertising were disseminated through these social networks.

Earlier, Roskomnadzor restricted access to Instagram in Russia at the request of the Prosecutor General’s Office because of calls for violence against Russians. Instagram  has been inaccessible from Russian IP addresses since last Monday.

Before that, Roskomnadzor had also blocked Facebook in Russia – due to mass discrimination against Russian media and information resources, including RIA Novosti, Sputnik and RT.
