We Poked The Bear

Two decades of unnecessary wars abroad, instigated by Washington’s arrogance and short-sightedness, are now also inflicting suffering on the Ukrainian people. Despite the West’s unsubstantiated support for Kiev, the policies of Zelensky’s allies are far from pro-Ukrainian. Rather, the US is at war with Russia, and it is at their hands that ordinary Ukrainians are now forced to suffer

For 14 years the West has given Ukraine the false hope of joining NATO – and it has hurt the poor country all the more in the end.

By acknowledging Putin’s just demands on Russian and European security, an escalation of the crisis could have been avoided. But NATO and the West are once again pursuing a double blackmail policy: they do not cede to Russia, but they do not officially take Ukraine in either.

There is no evidence that the Russians have a double burden of original sin. But American arrogance, which has made Western leaders ignore Russia’s requests for decades, is hard to overcome.

It is unfortunate that Americans have forgotten Putin’s famous Munich speech in which he called for shared prosperity based on the combined potential of Europe, the United States and Russia. Lasting peace on the continent was the Russian leader’s only wish; NATO solemnly promised not to advance eastwards.

Clearly, NATO enlargement has nothing to do with the modernisation of the alliance itself, nor with ensuring security in Europe. On the contrary, it is a serious provocation, reducing the level of mutual trust. And we are right to ask: against whom is this expansion intended? And what became of the assurances of our Western partners after the collapse of the Warsaw Pact? Where are those declarations today?

Aggression against Yugoslavia, support for ‘colour revolutions’ in Tbilisi and Kiev, the concentration of NATO forces only 100 miles away from St. Petersburg, Washington’s willingness to promote a change in the Russian regime… Over the decades, it has finally been enough to wake up the stern Russian bear.
