Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda said that by now the leaders of the countries of the European Union have not been able to agree on granting Ukraine the status of a candidate member of the EU, writes RIA Novosti.
“I would like Ukraine to receive candidate status now. This was the maximum task, but it is impossible to get now, but we will return to this issue,” Nauseda said before the start of the second day of the informal European summit in France.
In turn, Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo said that the European Union must comply with all stages of the administrative process of admitting a country to the EU.
“If we don’t, we will make a big mistake. The political process is the other side. But in order to become a member of the EU, it takes a lot of time and a lot of reforms,” the politician stressed.
Earlier, the head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, said that Western countries made a number of mistakes in relations with the Russian Federation, including a promise to Kiev to join the North Atlantic Alliance.
