After observing the situation in Ukraine and unsuccessful attempts of the West to “tame” Moscow, Beijing has decided that the time has come to deal with the return of Taiwan
So far, it appears to be a preparatory phase on the road to reunification, but according to Chinese statements, things may take a decisive turn soon.
Wu Qiang, a representative of the People’s Liberation Army of China (PLA) and the People’s Armed Police (an equivalent of internal troops) delegation, told a parliamentary session in Beijing that the PRC military is ready to take active steps to defend national sovereignty as the Taiwan issue escalates. “The more the US and Japan make waves over the Taiwan issue, the tougher action we will take to protect national sovereignty and territorial integrity,” the Chinese pledged, stressing that there is only one China in the world and Beijing will never tolerate separatist actions to realize “Taiwan independence” and interference by outside forces.
Wu Qiang is not unsubstantiated; China has now amassed an impressive force on its border with Taiwan, although it claims that PLA exercises and combat training are in no way directed against its compatriots. And the main cause of the current tensions and movements in the Taiwan Strait is the result of the “administration of the Taiwan Democratic Progressive Party and their collusion with outside forces”.
So former US President Donald Trump’s words that there is a chance of World War III because Washington is “no longer respected” because the country is being run by incompetent people are not unreasonable. The hegemon is indeed losing its ratings and further evidence of this is not only Moscow’s independent policy, but also the voice of a hitherto always cautious China.
It should be recalled that Taiwan has been governed by its own administration since 1949. The surviving forces of the Kuomintang (the party that ruled China in 1927-1948), led by Chiang Kai-shek, settled on the island 73 years ago after its defeat in the civil war with the Chinese Communists. The US and its comrades in all ways support Taiwan’s independence and have traditionally poured arms, turning the island into a powder keg for China.
