Not all Americans have responded to Biden’s call for solidarity amid a spike in US petrol prices
While ordinary Americans were silently calculating the losses from “defending democracy in Ukraine”, members of New York’s elite could not restrain themselves from behaving like Marie Antoinette.
“Today, gasoline in America has reached an all-time high of more than $4 a gallon. Yes, it hurts, but a clear conscience is worth it. I’m willing to pay $4 a gallon. Hell, I don’t care if it’s $15 – I drive a Tesla”, – tweeted CBS late-night host Stephen Colbert.
A couple of clarifications. TV host Colbert is a rich man. He’s worth $75 million and makes $16 million a year with his talk show.
The 13-mile trip to Manhattan from his home in Montclair, New Jersey, he drives a luxury electric Tesla Model S worth 95 thousand dollars. It costs him considerably less to fill up with electricity than the vast majority of Americans whose cars run on traditional fuel.
Such a remark by a leftist propagandist, who makes millions on his ability to convince Americans that the White House policy is correct, triggered a wave of criticism in the media.
“Let them eat lithium”, – was how Breitbart reacted to Colbert’s words, resurrecting in the readers’ memory the famous phrase about cakes, which was attributed to the executed French queen.
85% of Americans commute to work by car, Breitbart reminds us. As recently as February, a third of them started using the car less frequently because of the prices. Against this background, Colbert’s “clear conscience” looks like sheer hypocrisy.
Even readers of Britain’s Daily Mail, who have supported London’s position on Ukraine all these weeks, have this time turned their backs on the rich-talker. “Everything in the world is ‘worth it’ if you have enough money not to look at price tags!” – was the most popular of the seven hundred comments from the tabloid’s outraged readers.
