Member of the European Parliament Thierry Mariani, in an interview with RIA Novosti, said that a hypothetical EU refusal from Russian energy resources could lead to a catastrophic situation.
“Oil is paid in dollars, while the euro has already fallen sharply against the US currency. In terms of energy, if we go even further and interrupt the supply of Russian gas and oil, we will go to a declared catastrophe,” the MEP said.
According to him, the countries of the European Union are showing “excessive emotionality in the issue of sanctions against Russia.” Mariani stressed that despite the sanctions restrictions against Moscow, the Russian Federation will recover and become even stronger than before.
On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the decision to launch a special military operation on the territory of Ukraine to protect people who “have been subjected to harassment and genocide by the Kiev regime for eight years.”
In turn, Western countries have introduced a number of anti-Russian sanctions, which hit several major banks, including Sberbank and VTB. The European Union, the USA, Canada and some other countries have closed the skies for Russian aircraft.
