Expert comments on Zelensky’s words that Ukraine could reconsider renunciation of nuclear weapons

“In such outreach exercises, Kiev can get even more problems in relations with leading European and North American countries.”

Sergey Ermakov, an expert at the Russian Research Coordination Center, commented to RT on Zelensky’s words that Ukraine could reconsider the renunciation of nuclear weapons.

“This is not the first statement from official Kiev that the possibility of acquiring a nuclear status is allegedly being considered. I must say that in fact there are very serious political and technical obstacles to this. All this will violate the very Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, because then, in 1994, it was unambiguously decided that Ukraine would renounce its nuclear status”, he said.

In NATO, such an initiative of Kiev will not be welcome, the expert is sure:

“The same NATO partners, primarily the United States, who are not interested in Ukraine getting nuclear weapons under its control, have actively objected and will continue to object to such a nuclear status, given the level of strategic and political culture that we are seeing now in the Kiev leadership: what Poroshenko has, what Zelensky has. They can raise the nuclear issue, but this is in the style of propaganda.”
