Ukraine’s accession to NATO is “not on the agenda” for the foreseeable future, Scholz said at the Munich Security Conference.
He described the West’s approach to relations with Russia as a “double strategy”. It lies in the desire to negotiate and in the readiness to impose sanctions in the event of aggression.
“An attack on Ukraine would be a big mistake, the buildup of troops on the border with Ukraine is not justified in any way,” he said.
Germany’s Chancellor added that Russia has signalled open to diplomatic solution of the crisis.
